Artúr mac Áedáin was an historic war chief of the Gaelic nation of Dal Riata. Artúr led his people against the Picts and was killed in battle in 582 CE.

That Artúr was the inspiration for the legendary Arthur was originally proposed by Richard Barber following suggestions by Norma Chadwick, then later championed by David F. Carrol and further supported by Michael Wood.
