Camelot was a historical-fantasy-drama television series which premiered on 1 April 2011. It was co-produced by the Starz cable network and GK-TV which began production during the summer of 2010.

Head writer Chris Chibnall has said that every era needs its own version of the story of Camelot. He states that this version will include strong currents of politics and romance in what he has described as an adult drama: "The amazing thing about Camelot is you can talk about political pursuits and it's all about the romance. It's all about the passion. It's all about great ideals compromised by falling in love with the wrong person." Chibnall also states that the story which is told in this new series has a special relevance for today's world because it is about the promise of world leaders to create a better world, and then trying to carry through on their promises. This can be seen in the way that Merlin shares the idea of a new kind of king and a new kind of kingdom that can be possible under Arthur's rule, and the way Arthur tries to live up to Merlin's dreams. One central relationship in the story will be the one shared by Arthur and Merlin. Fiennes has joked that he thinks "of Merlin as a sort of cross between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Donald Rumsfeld," referring to Kenobi's mentoring qualities and Rumsfeld's political agendas.

It is the late 5th century and Britain has been free of Roman rule for several decades and is vulnerable to outside enemies, particularly the Saxons. Britain is divided up into several kingdoms, each one ruled by kings and lords, and the one that starts to emerge as the most powerful, Camelot, is the focus of this historical fiction. The series starts off with King Uther's sudden death and chaos threats to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther's unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur's cold, ambitious and tyrannical half-sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the royal crown in this epic battle for not only Camelot, but all of Britain.
