A Medieval Spearhead
Rhongomyniad (= ‘spear’ + ‘slayer’) is the name of King Arthur’s spear or lance. It is first (briefly) mentioned in Culhwch and Olwen (c. 11th century). Later, Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia regum Britanniae simply calls it ‘Ron’ as does Layamon. (Presumably, this was a shortened form of Rhongomyniad.) Layamon comments in another passage (without naming the weapon) that Arthur’s spear was forged in Carmarthen by a smith called Griffin. He also adds that it formerly belonged to Uther Pendragon.
