The Long Sunset is a play by R. C. Sherriff, originally broadcast on radio and later live at the Birmingham Reperatory Theater in 1955.

It tells the tale of a group of Romans left behind when the Legions depart in 410 AD. As Saxon invaders threaten them, they are aided by a Briton soldier named Arthur. This is one of the first versions to try to present a de-mythologized Arthur, grounded in a historical setting, if not in reality. This Arthur is a practical minded general and astute leader.

Even though the main Roman characters are killed at the climax, the ending carries the nationalistic verve that Arthur's resistance will ultimately succeed, both against the Saxons, and in the sense of being the spiritual foundation of the British Empire, which ultimately succeeds Rome as the world's power.
